Formosan termites are native to the Asian continent. They were brought to the United States in the 1940s after the close of World War II. It is believed that they entered the country via some of our port cities and spread from there. They have continued spreading throughout the United States through transported wood and other products. Many experts believe that Formosan termites have made their way across the country by feeding on railroad stakes.
Formosan Termites Prefer Warm Climates
This particular family of insects prefers warmer temperatures, and thus the highest concentration of these creatures is found in states like Florida, Georgia, Texas, and Hawaii. All of the southern states across the country are host to the Formosan termite. In addition to all of this southern hospitality, these pests have also been located in small pockets in northern areas as well, even into Canada. Transported wood materials are probably responsible for these pockets.
This particular species of termites build colonies of massive proportions numbering the millions, much larger colonies than other species. Formosan colonies are known to infest objects such as boats and even live trees in addition to homes, so their destructive power is quite evident and widespread.
Formosan Called the Super Termite
Formosan termites are often called the super termite because of their incredible destructive capabilities. They are able to consume immense amounts of wood because of their giant colony sizes. A single colony might contain up to several million members. Severe structural damage to a home can occur within a few months when a Formosan colony gets going, so time is of the essence in battling these insects if infestation is detected or suspected. In addition, because of the huge population size and immense destructive power, the presence of colonies of these termites poses a major threat to houses and other structures nearby an infested home.
Formosan termites infest homes and other buildings, but they also are known to feed on boats, high rise condominiums, and trees, as mentioned previously. These are an incredibly invasive and swift moving species of termites that can cause immense damage in a very short period of time. Anyone who has reason to suspect the presence of a Formosan population has no time to lose. Getting in touch with a termite control company as soon as possible is of the utmost importance to save the structure from severe damage.
Formosans Have a Caste System
Formosan termites have a caste system that includes a king, a queen, workers, soldiers, and reproductives. Each group or caste plays a specific role in defending and perpetuating the colony. The workers have the task of providing the food for the colony. Soldiers defend the nest from invaders. Reproductives are tasked with breeding. The queen of the colony is the leader. She can expect to live for around fifteen years, and can lay up to 2000 eggs per day. Workers and soldiers do not live even half that long on average. The total colony size numbers in the millions when it reaches maturity.
This particular breed of termites is one of the most destructive and dangerous on the planet. The size of the colony and the well organized and constant activity to perpetuate and grow it makes infestation incredibly destructive to a home or other building. Homeowners who believe they may have a problem with this specific species of termites should not waste any time in getting some professional help on what to do about the situation. Formosan termites are extremely hard to eradicate even by the best professionals, so early detection is immensely valuable.
