Sand Termite Barriers

Sand termite barriers are a great choice for keeping away those wood eating critters from one’s beach front home. It is easy to revile a termite. What is there to like about them? They are creepy looking critters which do devastating damage to people’s homes and buildings. Once they become infested on someone’s property they incredibly hard to get rid of as they burrow underground in colonies of thousands. As grotesque as they are the worse part of it all is that they go unnoticed until they have done devastating damage. It if only when we see what they have eaten do we know they are there.

Sand Termites and Your Beach Home

There are more than hundreds of different kinds of termite species. They can be found all across the globe, and while they are similar in many ways they are also differences between them as well. Some termites live in trees, others in nests. Sand termites are a kind of subterranean termite. Subterranean termites live in underground tunnels. Sand termites in particle live in tunnels that are obviously made of sand. Since they call sand their home, beach houses in particular are the ones who are in the most danger of these nasty pests. Using the loose sand as well as feces and saliva, termites burrow interconnecting tunnels where they live and fester. By living underground, termites are incredibly hard to spot and often aren’t dealt with until severe damage has been done.

Be Preventative, Set Up a Sand Barrier

If one were to ask any pest control specialist about the best way to rid one’s home or building of any kind of termite infestation they would say it is most wise to be preventative. By taking a few steps before hand, one can make sure termites are not a problem. Being that we are talking about sand termites and beach houses, there are two different kinds of barriers to choose between. One is a physical barrier. Nothing too complicated by this method, using physical termite barriers that separate the sand from the wood foundation of a home. This efficiently blocks the termites from their food source forcing them to look elsewhere for dinner. Although it should be noted that termites can possibly infest the house through the exterior walls. If this happens then getting rid of them through chemical sprays or bait traps is decisively easier than fumigating them out of the foundation. If one is worried about having barriers installed in their home and how it may affect air circulation or heating; then one should get a physical barrier with holes. Sand termites are limited to moving through spaces of three millimeters are more and can only move sand that has particles that are one millimeter wide. So installing a physical barrier with small enough holes or openings will ensure both that termites don’t get in and that air is properly circulated.

The second kind of sand termite barrier available is called a chemical barrier. Unlike a physical barrier which is a physical structure, chemical barriers are like cement blocks which are buried into the sand. These cement blocks are coated in a termite killing agent that eradicates the termite when they come into contact with it. Chemical barriers can be efficient at keeping away sand termites from the wood foundations of one’s house, but it should be noted that they do require replacement after a certain amount of time as the chemical will wear off. Whichever type of method one chooses, they can be sure to no longer have to worry about termites now that they have sand termite barriers.
